Advanced Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription or Aromatherapy Workbook

Advanced Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription

Author: Vivian H Heyward

The fifth edition of Advanced Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription provides a comprehensive and advanced approach to physical fitness appraisal and exercise prescription. With new information, expanded chapters, and an array of ancillary materials, this text will serve as a unique resource for both students and practitioners.

Advanced Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription, Fifth Edition, provides a well-balanced approach to the assessment of physical fitness and the design of exercise programs, addressing cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular fitness, body weight and composition, and flexibility. Two chapters are dedicated to each of these fitness components: one on assessment, followed by one on exercise prescription.

The text is reflective of updates made in the seventh edition of ACSM’s Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription, and it is expanded to include new or updated information on the following areas:
*  Maximal and submaximal graded exercise testing in healthy populations, including treadmill and cycle ergometer ramp protocols
*  Muscular fitness testing protocols and norms for children and adults
*  Field tests and norms for evaluating the cardiorespiratory fitness, functional strength, and flexibility of older adults
*  Guidelines for developing periodized resistance training programs for novice, intermediate, and advanced lifters
*  Physical activity and exercise recommendations for health benefits, weight loss, and weight maintenance

Both students and practitioners will benefit from the multidisciplinary approach used in this book. It synthesizes concepts, principles, and theories based on research in exercise physiology, kinesiology, measurement, psychology, and nutrition to provide a direct and clear-cut approach to physical fitness assessment and exercise prescription. Advanced Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription, Fifth Edition, includes pedagogical tools such as key questions at the beginning of each chapter, key points, review questions, and key terms. In addition, the text features an array of ancillary tools: an instructor guide, as with the previous edition, and two new tools, including a test package and a presentation package. All three ancillaries are offered online through a convenient product-specific Web site. These ancillaries will greatly aid the teaching process and provide a richer educational experience.

To enhance the material, this text is packaged with the supplemental online course, Cardiorespiratory Fitness Assessment and Prescription. The course works in tandem with the text to bridge the gap between research and practice, providing a comprehensive and advanced approach to physical fitness testing and exercise prescription. The online course component will help readers test and assess cardiorespiratory fitness in normal adults and design exercise programs to match their individual requirements and abilities. Readers will assume the role of a newly hired fitness trainer and will interact with six virtual clients in real-life situations as they move through a series of situations and exercises. A brief quiz will complete each daily session.

The substantially updated Advanced Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription, Fifth Edition, is an essential text and reference for students and professionals of exercise science. Additions and revisions to the text make it the most valuable and relevant resource available for practitioners.

Reviewer: Edward M. Heath, PhD (Utah State University College of Education & Human Services)
Description: This is a 4th edition of an undergraduate text (previously published in 1998) covering fitness appraisal and exercise prescription for healthy individuals. The author has incorporated new information in the field, with particular attention to the 6th edition of ACSM's Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription (2000), as well as some new pedagogical features.
Purpose: This is a book designed for a one-semester undergraduate fitness assessment and exercise prescription course.
Audience: The book is predominantly targeted at undergraduate students in exercise science but will also be an excellent resource for those working with healthy individuals in all aspects of the exercise and wellness field. Dr. Heyward has been a leader in this field for more than a decade.
Features: The book begins with a brief description of the impact of physical activity on health and disease followed by a chapter on screening and risk classification. The rest of the text includes information devoted to the assessment of and prescription for the five components of fitness. The information on assessing body composition, which is the primary research focus of the author, is particularly well done. The most appealing feature of the book must be the numerous choices the author has included in the assessment of the different fitness components. The choices that are offered the reader and the forms and norm tables throughout the text and in the appendices will be extremely useful for students and practitioners.
Assessment: The 4th edition of Dr. Heyward's text is an excellent undergraduate text that is a standard in the field. There is not a better undergraduate assessment and prescription text for practical information on the testing and prescribing exercise for apparently healthy individuals.

Heyward (U. of New Mexico) integrates principles and theories from a number of fields in her presentation of the physical fitness testing and exercise prescription program design.
