Your Complete Guide to Breast Reduction and Breast Lifts

Author: Alain Polynic

Have You Ever Wished Your Breasts Were Smaller?

If so, you probably already know the problems large breasts can cause—social embarrassment, back and neck pain, shoulder pain from bra straps cutting into your shoulders, and heat rashes under your breasts in the summer. Large, heavy breasts can even affect your posture, causing you to gradually stoop.

Fortunately, surgical options are available that can greatly reduce your discomfort.  Thousands of women have found relief through breast reduction surgery. Authors Alain Polynice, M.D. and Aloysius Smith, M.D. are board-certified plastic surgeons who have performed hundreds of these breast procedures and now share their expertise and experience with you. They answer such questions as:

            •  How much can breast size be reduced?
            •  What kind of anesthesia is used?
            •  Where are the incisions placed?
            •  Where will I have scars?
            •  Is there much pain after surgery?
            •  How long is the recovery period?
            •  What are the potential complications?

In Your Complete Guide to Breast Reduction and Breast Lifts, the authors guide you through the entire experience of breast reduction surgery; they also cover another popular procedure—breast lifts. From your first consultation to post-surgical care, they deliver information that will help you decide whether cosmetic breast surgery is for you.

This book also contains 60 color photos, including dozens of "before and after" photos of women who have had breast reductions and breast lifts, a resource section, glossary, and index.

Fitness Information for Teens: Health Tips about Exercise, Physical Well-Being, and Health Maintenance

Author: Lisa Bakewell

According to the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, adolescence itself is a risk factor for physical inactivity-a major contributor to obesity, one of the most serious chronic health conditions threatening the nation today. During the teen years, opportunities to participate in organized sports decrease and fewer hours are spent in physical education classes. Teens also walk less once they start driving, and activities like watching television, listening to music, playing video games, and online computing can lead to the development of a sedentary lifestyle. By increasing activity and becoming fit, however, teens can adopt habits that will help them maintain wellness throughout their adult years.

Sex as Nature Intended It: The Most Important Thing You Need to Know about Making Love, but No One Could Tell You until Now

Author: Kristen OHara

Most Important Book on Sexuality Ever Written. Destined to capture our national consciousness and change the sex life and sexual attitude of America's men and women forevermore.

Nature's Secret to Greatest Sex Ever! This landmark book is a must-read for every man and woman.

If you are a man, it will improve your sex life immensely—not simply an enhancement—but a profound enrichment. Not just more of the same. But NEW sensations, BETTER sensations, awakening you to sensual delights beyond your highest expectations. At the same time, it offers a newfound explanation and solution for the sexual dysfunctions you may be experiencing.

If you are a woman, you, too, have much to look forward to, for it brings the promise of greater overall happiness between the sheets, and pages, of your life. Gentler sex, more sensuous sex, more satisfying sex, increased attainment of orgasm from intercourse, can be yours—giving you new insight into the joy that lovemaking can bring when nature is on your side. At the same time, it will give you a new perspective on the role sexual fulfillment—true sexual fulfillment—plays in the overall well-being of your relationship.

How can the book make such a prodigious promise?

By revealing a sexual truth of nature—a truth of nature so elemental and yet so enabling, it will not only bring you and your partner a more fulfilling sex life, but, in the process, will reach into the very heart of your relationship and bring a deeper meaning to the word "love."

Discusses sex, love, and relationship happiness from a new and surprising perspective: How does surgical alteration of the penis in infancy (circumcision) affect the sexuality of a man when he becomes an adult? How does the circumcised penis affect the sexual pleasure of the woman on the receiving end? And how does sexual pleasure during intercourse—or a deficiency—affect the love bond of the relationship?

This landmark book is the first to detail the many sexual functions and benefits of the male foreskin for both the man and his female partner.

Presents unequivocal evidence that the foreskin plays a multifaceted role during intercourse that not only promotes increased sexual pleasure, but this enhanced pleasure also serves to enrich and continually re-cement the love bond, borne from sexual union.

Circumcision's removal of the foreskin (ultra-erogenous tissue and the penis's only moving part) not only diminishes the man's sexual pleasure, but also the woman's. A national survey of women, conducted by the author, reveals that circumcision abnormalizes the way the penis thrusts and feels to a woman, significantly diminishing her sexual enjoyment and her ability to achieve orgasm from intercourse.

The book's explanations of the profound negative effects circumcision has on the intercourse experience of both partners will surely leave America stunned. But luckily, there is a bright side to this shocking news: It is now possible to restore the foreskin through various non-surgical techniques. The book addresses this topic and enwraps the emerging movement for foreskin restoration with hope, promise, and dignity.

What People Are Saying

Christiane Northrup
I've always felt that the male foreskin is there for a reason. Until recently, I didn't know exactly what that reason was. But now, thanks to Kristen O'Hara's well-researched book, I finally understand the reasons for the design of the penis and foreskin, and how this design ensures optimal penile function, including the intact organ's ability to satisfy the female sexually.

Brain Repair or Healthy Foods

Brain Repair

Author: Sonald G Stein

Sixty years ago, the Nobel laureate Santiago Ramon y Cajal stated that "in the adult brain, nervous pathways are fixed and immutable; everything may die, nothing may be regenerated." Cajal's influence has been legendary--and conventional wisdom still holds that the human brain cannot repair itself. Today, however, remarkable discoveries from laboratories around the world offer a much more optimistic prognosis. In Brain Repair, three internationally renowned neuroscientists team up to offer an intriguing and up-to-the-minute introduction to the explosive advances being made in the research, technology, and treatment of brain damage.
The key to neuroscience's most exciting discoveries to date is a theory that is rapidly gaining adherents in the scientific community--the theory of neuroplasticity. Unlike the prevalent notion that mental processes--like seeing, remembering, and speaking--take place only within highly specialized brain regions made up of irreplaceable and non-regenerating cells, neuroplasticity stresses that cells throughout the brain can not only regenerate, but can adapt their function to assume critical roles once performed by damaged tissue. In clear, accessible language, the authors show us that the brain manufactures a host of complex chemicals that actually foster growth in damaged brain cells. We visit the laboratories where researchers are untangling the mystery of Parkinson's disease and trying to understand what goes wrong in stroke victims, and why some, thought permanently impaired, show remarkable improvements. In addition, they discuss how even today misguided ideas can adversely affect how physicians treat patients--for example, they describe common drugtreatments given to stroke and head trauma patients that can actually worsen the effects of brain damage. And, along the way, they detail the fascinating history of how brain structure and functioning has been understood and studied, from prehistoric times to the present.
Over a half million people each year suffer brain-damaging injuries and diseases--but the outlook for their eventual recovery is far more hopeful than it was just a short while ago. A best-selling volume in France and Mexico, Brain Repair provides a vividly written, wide-ranging look at the leading edge of one of science's most exciting frontiers.

Booknews

Three renowned neuroscientists review recent advances in the research, technology, and treatment of brain damage in language the general reader can understand. They reveal that brain cells can regenerate and adapt their functions to take over the role of damaged tissue, criticize initial treatments in trauma centers that can lead to further damage, and look at laboratory research in humans and animals leading toward a new understanding of Parkinson's disease, stroke, age and recovery, and the role of environment in recovery of function. The Hidden Addiction And How to Get Free or Alternative Medicine Magazines Definitive Guide to Weight Loss

The Hidden Addiction And How to Get Free, Vol. 1

Author: Janice Keller Phelps

The startling news of the Hidden Addiction is that all addictions are rooted in the same genetic flaw in your body. Dr. Phelps explains that addiction does not result primarily from emotional stress, lack of willpower, or some other psychological factor. It is a concrete physiological condition that can be addressed, and a detailed treatment program is provided in this book.

Publishers Weekly

The authors, both medical doctors, maintain that four out of 10 people are addicted to sugar, caffeine, nicotine, alcohol and some prescription drugs because they are born with a metabolic or genetic predisposition. Phelps and Nourse here offer a program for fighting such addiction that involves heavy doses of vitamin and mineral supplements, exercising, developing new routines, consulting with a physician or therapist and and the temporary use of anti-depressant drugs under medical guidance. Unfortunately this book does not address the complex psychological problems that accompany and often predate addiction. Moreover, most experts agree that the biggest hurdle to overcoming a bad habit is wanting to give up the habit. The Sugar Syndrome is aimed at those who have already won half the battle. (April)

Library Journal

This intriguing little book will shake up many readers' thinking on ``addiction.'' Dr. Phelps defines it as the ``compulsive and out-of-control use of any chemical substance that can produce . . . withdrawal symptoms'' and includes caffeine, nicotine, and sugar with the usual substances. She suggests that addictiveness is hereditary, and that depression can play a large role. Phelps offers a treatment program based on abstinence, nutrition, exercise, and new activities. If you've ever tried unsuccessfully to quit smoking or found yourself eating a whole plate of cookies, this book is for you. It's also for those working in the addiction field, and should spark some interesting discussions. Francia Schultz, Alcohol Certification Training Program, St. Herman's Seminary, Kodiak, Alas.

Periodo or Psycho Regression

Periodo: Guia de una Joven

Author: JoAnn Loulan

Due to good nutrition, better health, and other factors, girls these days really do grow up faster than they used to. The average girl begins to develop between the ages of eight and ten, with menstruation starting two to three years later. Unfortunately the subject remains a difficult one for many parents to broach. Geared toward parents and their daughters, this Spanish-language edition of Period — the best-selling English language version — offers a refreshingly positive perspective on puberty and menstruation, without sex education. Thoroughly revised and updated, Periodo teaches girls a healthy attitude toward their bodies. Complete with clear illustrations and a parent's guide, it covers the subject in a thoughtful and thorough manner.

Criticas

Gr 4 Up-A factual and easy-to-understand book about puberty and menstruation. The authors interviewed several women and asked them to recall their feelings about the changes in their bodies and their experiences during the first year of menstruation. The first chapter introduces the body changes that girls go through to become young women. Diagrams depict the sexual organs and are labeled with scientific terminology. These diagrams are tastefully done, and parents should not find the illustrations objectionable. This is not a sex education book, but it does discuss the menstrual cycle in a culturally acceptable manner. Other chapters discuss feminine hygiene products, mood swings, and other physical changes, along with a thorough explanation of the dreaded pelvic exam. This is an appropriate book to include in school and public libraries, but it would also make a great resource for the home or for school counselors and nurses. Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Michael Gabay, PharmD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy)
Description: This is one in a series of books that brings together information on medicinal and aromatic plants from a variety of sources. The book reviews several topics related to the genus eucalyptus including general aspects of the plant, cultivation and production, and biological and end use aspects. Unique elements in this book include in-depth reviews of research involving eucalyptus, concise illustrations, and a variety of appendixes covering topics from sources of eucalyptus seeds to quality criteria for eucalyptus oils.
Purpose: According to the authors, the purpose of this book and the whole series, is to summarize information related to medicinal and aromatic plants from a variety of references in one resource. Each book in the series gives an in-depth review of a single plant genus ranging from production of the plant to market trends and quality control. These are worthy objectives which the authors have met. There are few, if any, books on medicinal and aromatic plants that are as comprehensive for a single plant genus.
Audience: This book is written for anyone with a more specialized interest in, or performs research with, medicinal or aromatic plants. The book itself contains detailed scientific information regarding botany, genetics, chemistry, chemical ecology, and research trends. Eucalyptus is compiled by approximately 30 authors with a broad spectrum of expertise in the area of medicinal and aromatic plants.
Features: Eucalyptus covers a wide spectrum of topics including general botany of the genus, cultivation and production of the plant, formulations, clinical uses, and future research trends. The book is part of a series reviewing medicinal and aromatic plants a genus at a time. The concept behind the book is innovative due to the fact that few books exist bringing together as much useful information regarding a single medicinal plant. Each topic is presented in great detail with useful references, illustrations, and appendices. The appendices include information on sources of eucalyptus seeds, composition of commercially available oils, and packaging and labeling requirements for the oils. The main shortcoming of the book may be its limited range of audience appeal particularly in the Western world where familiarity and use of medicinal plants is still in its infancy.
Assessment: This is a high-quality, well-researched, detailed reference on the genus eucalyptus. For people with a specialized interest in medicinal or aromatic plants, all the books in this series would be viewed as extremely useful. For general clinical use however, practitioners may want to avoid this series of books and purchase a less specialized natural product reference such as the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database..

Ethical Patient Care: A Casebook for Geriatric Health Care Teams

Author: Mathy Doval Mezey

The delivery of good medical care often involves professionals from various disciplines working together. Interdisciplinary health care teams can be especially valuable in managing patients with complex medical and social needs, such as older persons in hospital, community, or home settings. Such teams, however, can also complicate or even create problems because of their diverse views and responsibilities. Ethical Patient Care: A Casebook for Geriatric Health Care Teams is designed to teach effective and responsible group decision making to clinicians working in teams to treat older patients.

The editors use the case study method to present ethical dilemmas that team members encounter in the management of geriatric patients. Patients with multiple chronic conditions so often require the care of more than one medical specialist, and in the introductory chapters the editors suggest ways to resolve conflicts among patients, health care professionals, and the institutions that support them, including hospitals, HMOs, insurance companies, and the government. The book is then divided into four sections, each dealing with one angle of the team-care picture. The first section treats the diverse ethical imperatives of various professionals, conflicts among disciplinary approaches, and and varying attitudes toward end-of-life- decision making. Section two focuses on the patient and covers patient confidentiality, family decisionmaking and interaction with the healthcare team, issues of patient and team nonadherence to the care plan, and elder abuse and neglect. Section three examines the emerging difficulties of decentralized health care in settings such as hospitals, nursinghomes, and the home, including clinician accountability and how ethical dilemmas differ across settings. Section four discusses the problems arising from the increasing responsibility of clinicians to manage costs and serve the interests of hospitals and insurers. Ethical Patient Care is a valuable resource for bioethicists, gerontologists, and the physicians, nurses, social workers, and therapists who care for aging persons.

Beatrice M. Robbins

This is a timely exploration of the ethical issues being encountered on a daily basis by geriatric practitioners. The combination of instructional chapters providing a theoretical framework with chapters outlining cases yields a very useful and practical text.

Peter V. Rabins

I know of no other volume that addresses the ethical issues raised by team care in such depth.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Deborah Kuhn Bruley, MS, RN (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Nursing)
Description: This book uses case analyses to teach ethical geriatric care from an interdisciplinary team perspective. Most chapters include discussion questions or small group activities to assist learning.
Purpose: The book facilitates the education and training of healthcare professionals in the area of ethical geriatric care from an interdisciplinary perspective and approach. This interdisciplinary team approach is greatly needed in the current healthcare climate and is applicable to today's clinical practice. By gathering authors from many different disciplines and levels of healthcare, the authors have contributed greatly to our understanding of the theoretical and practical issues involved in supplying ethical geriatric care.
Audience: The entire healthcare team is targeted, including physicians, nurses, social workers, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals. Throughout the book, these various professions are represented in authorship, examples, and references. Drawing from a large group of contributors, this book is applicable for all healthcare professions.
Features: The book provides an overview of ethical geriatric principles and how they apply in many different cases, with particular attention given to the results of their application for patients, families, healthcare professionals, and healthcare systems. By including discussion questions and small group activities with most chapters, educational activities are facilitated. However, inclusion of additional tables and graphs would have clarified some of the processes described in narrative.
Assessment: This is a wonderful addition to the libraries of both educators and clinicians. Its up-to-date examples of the complex issues involved in providing ethical geriatric care present thought-provoking educational material as well as guidance in providing interdisciplinary healthcare. Although examples are of geriatric cases, their applicability in discussing ethical healthcare for other populations can be easily seen. I know of no other book with this up-to-date, unique perspective on providing ethical patient care to elderly patients and their families.

Booknews

Designed to promote effective and responsible group decision-making for inter-disciplinary health care teams, this book uses case studies to illustrate ethical problems related to the management of geriatric patients. Specific methods are outlined for resolving conflicts between patients, health care professionals, and medical institutions. Seventeen chapters consider the role of professionals, the interests of care recipients, teamwork, and the impact of organization on team care. Annotation c. Dietas y Recetas de Maria Antonieta

Author: Maria Antonieta Collins

Publishers Weekly

Often putting her personal health at risk, celebrity Univision journalist Collins has tried everything in her long and constant struggle to lose weight and maintain it, from the latest and most popular diets and medications to special and costly treatments like acupuncture and body wraps. Having maintained her weight for over a year now, she tells her personal story and shares her hard-earned tips for winning the weight-loss battle. This is a frank, humorous, and informative book on a topic of great interest to most Hispanic/ Latina women. Collins draws examples from her personal experience to point out the dangers, myths, and general misinformation that prevail about weight loss. Along the way, she also gives readers a glimpse into the world of Univision, sharing stories about the personal weight management programs of other well-known personalities such as Jorge Ramos, Maria Elena Salinas, and Don Francisco. Even though she uses several sayings and colloquialisms from her native Mexico, she often provides explanatory comments for the non-Mexican reader. The easy and nutritious sample diets and recipes use measurements in kilos and liters, but many recent Hispanic immigrants will be familiar with these measuring systems. Highly recommended for all public libraries and bookstores. Yolanda Cuesta, Sacramento, CA Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

Globalization, Women, and Health in the 21st Century

Author: Ilona Kickbusch

We are still only beginning to understand the increasingly complex set of interdependencies among gender, health, and globalization. Globalization, Women, and Health in the 21st Century brings together a diverse group of distinguished scholars and activists to explore the new risks and freedoms for men and women in a global society and their health determinants. They map the gendered impact of these processes and present a health landscape that goes beyond nation states into trans-border flows of capital, people, goods, and services. Each chapter begins with a global analysis of specific trends followed by “in perspective” pieces by authors from contrasting disciplines and geographies. Given rapid changes in global society through globalization, this book serves as an important resource to reiterate the place of health and gender at the forefront of discussion.

Running Wild or Risk Management for Health Fitness Professionals

Running Wild: An Extraordinary Adventure of the Human Spirit

Author: John Annerino

In this story of rare triumph, John Annerino chronicles his progress from injury to recovery to victory. Badly hurt in a climbing accident and told he would never run again, the author defied his doctors and his own overwhelming pain to run the length of the Grand Canyon three times, rediscovering Native American trade routes lost to modern knowledge. An incredible journey and spiritual quest to the limits of physical and mental endurance, Running Wild takes you there and leaves you breathless.

Kirkus Reviews

A runner's chronicle of adventures in the Grand Canyon and other desert locales. Annerino, the author of several books about the Southwest, recounts his years of recovery from a mid-1970s climbing accident, after which doctors doubted he would walk freely again. His recovery and þspiritual and mental renewalþ came from running, first short distances, then, inspired by tales of southwestern Indian runners who covered a hundred miles in a single day, longer and longer stretches of ground. Eventually he was able to cross such places as the Gran Desierto of northwestern Mexico, þthe largest sand sea in North America,þ and even to run a complicated and dangerous 250-mile-long course along the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. On a technical level, his memoir will be of interest to runners planning large-scale adventures of their own; Annerino excels at detailing the logistical difficulties of maintaining communication and establishing points of resupply, and he writes tellingly of the less tangible difficulties, among them loneliness, fear, cold, and, of course, heat. (The appendix, which describes a series of difficult desert runs, is especially useful.) His book will also be of interest to those working to overcome injury, as the author has so successfully done. Annerino is least successful when he strives to be poetic (þMy feet continue padding softly across the desert floor, sending up powdery wisps of dust with each footfall. I suck wind in, I blow air outþ). He also refers rather too often, and rather too bathetically, to a failed marriage, the unhappy details of which we did not need to know. Of small interest outside the sports and adventure-travelmarket, this is a generally well-written and even inspirational vade mecum.

Paths to God or Working in the Dark

Paths to God: Living the Bhagavad Gita

Author: Ram Dass

For centuries, readers have turned to the Bhagavad Gita for inspiration and guidance as they chart their own spiritual paths. As profound and powerful as this classic text has been for generations of seekers, integrating its lessons into the ordinary patterns of our lives can ultimately seem beyond our reach. Now, in a fascinating series of reflections, anecdotes, stories, and exercises, Ram Dass gives us a unique and accessible road map for experiencing divinity in everyday life. In the engaging, conversational style that has made his teachings so popular for decades, Ram Dass traces our journey of consciousness as it is reflected in one of Hinduism's most sacred texts. The Gita teaches a system of yogas, or "paths for coming to union with God."

In Paths to God, Ram Dass brings the heart of that system to light for a Western audience and translates the Gita's principles into the manual for living the yoga of contemporary life.

While being a guide to the wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita, Paths to God is also a template for expanding our definition of ourselves and allowing us to appreciate a new level of meaning in our lives.

Library Journal

Dass, long exiled from the faculty of Harvard for "psychedelic research," is well known as the author of Be Here Now, a book that gave a phrase to the language. His latest is an updated summary of a series of lectures that he gave in the mid-1970s. Despite its title, it is less a guide to the Gita than a tour through Dass's own post-Buddhist-like spiritual musings, with the Gita acting as a kind of springboard. Still, Dass's reflections are often interesting and stimulating; he is as well qualified as anyone now writing to "rediscover ways of honoring the sacred." For most collections. Against the Grain or Mind Body Therapy

Against the Grain: 150 Good Carb Mediterranean Recipes

Author: Diane Kochilas

Healthy food doesn't have to be boring and bland. Look to the Mediterranean for innovative, fresh, and nutritious ideas. In Against the Grain, award-winning cookbook author Diane Kochilas offers up a collection of satisfying, good-for-you recipes inspired by the exotic dishes of the Mediterranean.

Whether you're trying to lose weight or simply improve you're eating habits, sticking to a good carb diet is a great idea. The Mediterranean diet isn't all breads, grains, and pasta -- it includes plenty of fish, chicken, lamb, vegetables, and fruits. Against the Grain includes recipes for everything from light bites, such as tapas, soups, and salads, to hearty entrees and sides. The ingredient lists are supermarket-friendly and prep time is minimal, so busy home cooks can whip up healthy meals in minutes, every night of the week.

In addition to classics like Fresh Tomato Soup with Moroccan Spices, Chicken Cacciatore, and Pan-Seared Shrimp with Romesco Sauce, there are innovative, exotic new dishes like Grilled Skewered Lamb with Mint and Garlic Pesto, Pork Medallions Marinated with Olives and Orange, and Roasted Red Pepper and Feta Soufflé.

One of the basic principles of the Mediterranean lifestyle is that everything should be enjoyed in moderation. In Against the Grain, no foods are forbidden or totally off limits. Instead, you'll find formerly "sinful" ingredients like rich cheeses, potatoes, rice, fragrant nuts and oils, and wine incorporated into savory meals. Yes, the recipes are healthy and nutritious, but, more important, the dishes in Against the Grain are hearty, satisfying, and flavorful.

Publishers Weekly

By combining weight-loss tenets of the South Beach Diet with the touted health benefits of the Mediterranean way of eating, Kochilas (Meze; The Glorious Foods of Greece) brings flavorful, nourishing, low-calorie foods to the dieter's home kitchen. The success of the collection's dishes lies in the use of whole grains rather than processed white flour, copious use of vegetables and a sensible "nothing-in-excess" approach. Kochilas advocates easygoing meals made with fresh, seasonal and organic ingredients, and encourages use of herbs and spices to add flavor without calories. She recommends generous use of heart-friendly and delicious olive oil, the "liquid gold" of the Mediterranean. Home cooks will easily master Kochilas's easy, precise recipes, which include Asparagus, Basil, and Tomato Frittata; Roasted Red Pepper Hummus; Balsamic-Honey Glazed Chicken Breasts; and Spicy Lamb Kebabs. Her combination of good-carb dieting with the richness of the Mediterranean table is bound to bring some much needed joie de vivre to low-carb dining. Agent, Doe Coover. Kochilas's last cookbook, Meze, covered the small dishes of Greece. Her latest was inspired by her experience on the Atkins and South Beach diets and draws on recipes from all over the Mediterranean, not just Greece. With recipes like Spanakopita Souffle, Andalusian Monkfish Soup, and Lamb Baked in Parchment Paper, this is certainly an inventive low-carb collection. Some of the author's fans, however, may find the concept somewhat gimmicky. Nevertheless, there is sure to be demand; for most libraries. Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
